France allocates 5 M USD for the upgrade of pumped irrigation systems in the Magway region.
A Grant Agreement has been signed on September 11th 2014 between the Water Resource Utilization Department (WRUD) of theMinistry of Agriculture and Irrigation and the French Development Agency (AFD) in the presence of H.E. Mr Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France in Myanmar and co-signatory for AFD. This 4 MUSD grant will be used for the rehabilitation of pumped irrigation schemes in Myinkun and Kanni, Magway region as well as capacity building of the local users and administration.
Implementing arm of the French Official Development Aid policy, AFD started operating in Myanmar in June 2012. Beside ongoing regional initiatives also involving Myanmar, a total of 10 projects are currently being implemented for a total amount of 10 MUSD under the form of grants. With the contemplated extension of AFD intervention under the form of loans, four projects are in preparation for a total amount of nearly 150 MUSD in the sectors of agriculture, fisheries and water and sanitation.
