The Myanmar economy is expected to grow by 7.2% annually through t 2022, with the ICT industry seen to be a key catalyst in the country’s development. The country’s commitment to ICT is demonstrated by the setting up of and incubation hub under the auspices of the Myanmar Computer Federation.
Despite it being one of the world’s most populous nations with a population of over 50 million, telephone penetration levels are amongst the lowest in the world – according to independent research company BuddeComm, mobile users in the region are thought to be at around 17% and internet and fixed line usage around 2% but, with a Government target of 8% by 2016, the Myanmar market offers unequalled opportunities for investment and development.
Please briefly introduce the exhibition?
This exhibition is for telecommunications, enterprises and converging solutions, IT solutions and also satellite. This is the very first time international exhibition hold in Myanmar for the Myanmar Market. We are running for three days from 9 am till 5 pm every day. The exhibition and company presentations on day one, exhibition and the Myanmar Satellite forum on second day and Menander University Mobile Management Seminars on the last day.
Local businesses can come to CommuniCast Myanmar at MEP during the show to learn many things concerning this industry, and to meet the company that operates in this industry; how the technology will benefit the local economy.
Technology is very important for the growth of the country and its economy. it needs infrastructure to support the technology to be running on the cable, the network etc. It is step-by-step process with parallel functioning. So it shouldn’t be done when completing one step and then moving to next. The communication network here is growing, improving, expending, and covering the reach of Myanmar very rapidly. At the Thai pavilion you can see software part, the app station: all these companies, all these places and all the associations are developing software, app, technology that would run on the infrastructure. There also take place many business and educational events in this exhibition so please come and visit the exhibition and see the latest technologies of what is happening in this industry.
Do you have any plan to organize this exhibition in other cities like Nay Pyi Taw or Mandalay?
Yangon is the commercial center of Myanmar, so at the moment our plan is to organize this exhibition again next year in Yangon.
How do you think Myanmar will take time to catch up with neighboring countries in terms of infrastructure in IT industries?
It’s an interesting question because other neighboring countries are growing very far ahead, they are much more advanced. I have been to Myanmar two and a half years ago and at that time I found the mobile networking here was in its infancy. Within this period I notice changes happened very rapidly. There are now three operators and two of them are international corporations. And there are more operators to be announced. I can guess the infrastructure, the speed, and the capacity of the telecommunication network in Myanmar will be much greater sooner or later. In terms of capacity to have a user friendly, cost-effective and affordable telecommunication platform it will take three to five years.
How do you think Mobile Payment in Myanmar?
If you are talking about Mobile Payment, the only two countries Sweden and America that are now really pushing hard with mobile payment. Even in America, you of course have the new Apple product, Apple Pay. Countries are trying to pushing hard, but Myanmar is a very much cash-base society. So I don’t think that Mobile Banking in Myanmar will have rapid growth quickly. And to support mobile banking, you must have the telecommunication network, good infrastructure, IT solutions, quick connection to the internet, more Internet Service Providers (ISP) and so on. Then the type of communication I think will be more business and personal communication, education, government, social platforms. From my personal point of view the mobile banking will come a little bit later.
