Myanmar hosted  the 27th SEA Games, after 44 years, with the significant opening ceremony at Wunna Theikdi Stadium in Nay Pyi Taw on 11th December, 2013. The regional sporting event took place from 1st to 22nd December, 2013. The ceremony was attended by an audience of over 25,000 and also broadcasted to the international audience. The SEA Games, which take place biennially, feature 33 sports this year participated by athletes from 11 countries, in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay and Pathein (Ngwe Saung). At the end of the Games, Thailand achieved top in Medal Tally with 107 gold, 94 silver and 81 bronze, and Myanmar being the runner up with 86 gold, 62 silver and 85 bronze, and Vietnam third place with 73 gold, 86 silver and 86 bronze.
