Jo Jo Yang , Yoga Trainer/Yoga Studio Owner, Yangon Yoga House
How did you get to be a yoga trainer?
In 2014, my corporate job in London proved tiresome and I wanted to do something that made me feel good physically and emotionally. My yoga practice goes back to nine years ago and I was thinking about doing a yoga teacher training for a few years, so after I quit my job in London, it felt like the right time. I received my 200 – hour Training Certificate from Frog Lotus Yoga founder Vidya Heisel in Bali right before I moved to Yangon. It led to opening of my Yoga Studio to be conducted in English.
What is your aim in opening the Yangon Yoga House?
Most other places offering Yoga class in English in Yangon have only one or two teachers. Yangon Yoga House was opened in May 2015 to give the growing number of yoga trainees a place where they can practice consistently with different teachers and try different styles. The Yoga Studio has over 12 teachers plus we host visiting teachers, and each teacher brings their own personality and style to the practice. Our aim is: For Myanmar to have a yoga-practicing community for healthy living. In yoga classes we can have happiness and new experiences, while facing challenges. Moreover, those who do not fancy yoga may practice the Barre, Pilates, etc. Our main mission is to provide ways for people to feel good about their body.
How did you come prepared for Myanmar visit?
To tell the truth , I visited Myanmar in 2012, but unconvinced about its livability due to very hot weather and unreliable power. Three years afterwards I and my fiancé, becoming tired of corporate life in London, decided in favour of a different lifestyle . We were young, without a child, and there was no need to give care to parents yet. Myanmar is full of opportunities and exciting things, just like a blank canvas. It should have been for the same reason that a lot of foreigners have come to Myanmar.
What will you continue in regard of yoga discipline in Myanmar’?
The long-term objective is to make a Yoga Destination of Myanmar. Like going to Bali, tourists go for yoga practice to Thailand, which has 200-300 centers. Myanmar has beautiful nature, and plentiful produce for a vegetarian diet, but yoga centers are few. Therefore I would like to expand them.
