Myanmar’s first pop-up concept, TS1 Yangon, opens to the public on 6 April 2014, in Transit Shed No.1 between Lanthit Jetty and Kaing Dan No. 1 Jetty in the heart of downtown Yangon.

Located in the centre of one of Southeast Asia’s most renowned and bustling centres of exchange, The Yangon Pop-up  Project includes three distinct spaces for commerce, culture and cuisine. The concept, developed by Pun & Projects, aims to further connect Myanmar with the global community and spearhead urban renewal and cultural exchange in the country.

In keeping with the pop-up concept, spreading in popularity throughout international locales including Europe and the US, TS1 Yangon will feature different exhibitions in the gallery space, different retailers in the retail space and different menus in the restaurant space; all “popping –up” and rotating in regularly.

“Ultimately, this project will be used as a demonstration of the possibilities for downtown Yangon’s rejuvenation and an Illustration of how a genuine collaboration by people with distinctive skills and voices-be they local or international, artistic or culinary, urbane or unpolished- can be merged to create not just a moment, but a movement to revive this historic neighbourhood to its full potential,” said Ivan Pun, Founder of Pun & Projects.

The retail component of The Yangon Pop-Up Project opens with Myanmar Made, focused on showcasing the best and most interesting products found in Myanmar today. Merchandise has been carefully selected to promote traditional craftsmanship but designed with a fresh perspective.

Both TS.1 Gallery and Myanmar Made will be open to the public daily, Monday through Sunday, 10am to 8pm.

The cuisine component, Port Autonomy Restaurant+ Bar, set to open later this spring, will reflect the ethos of the project and focus on creating a gastronomic experience that is about the exchange of ideas between Myanmar and the world. The concept will revolve around Myanmar street food reinterpreted in innovative and modern ways to reflect the traditions and flavours of local cuisine, but incorporating elements inspired by the world beyond.  In addition to the three anchor components, the space will also play host to a carefully planned programme of cultural and social activities, potentially including: community education, concerts, literary readings, performances, screenings, trunk shows and workshops.
