TODAY have a chance to meet and talk with the GM of Holly Hotel a couple of weeks ago. The hotel which is owned by GMP Co Ltd and located on Thiriyadanar Wholesale Market Compound, Thudamar road, North Okkalapa Township, Yangon. Here what we found out about the hotel and its restaurant; Holly Cafe.

Your role at GMP and Holly Hotel.
I am a Director of GMP and the General Manager of Holly Hotel.

Could you tell me about Holly Holly and Holly Cafe?

Holly hotel is opened on January 5, 2016. Currently, we have 104 rooms and 80 staff member for the hospitality area. We have Delux room, Corner room and Premium room. The prices are suitable for both Asian and European market. Our occupancy rate is around 50-60%.

Holly Cafe especially serves Thai cuisine, opens daily from 6:00 a.m to 10:00 p.m. The head chef is Thai and co-chefs are locals.

Special menu at Holly Cafe?

The special dishes include fried rice with Chinese sausage, fried rice with minced pork nampliap (black olive), ma ma tom yum koong (dry), ma ma tom yum koong (soup), crispy spring roll stuffed with prawn and chicken, seafood fried chilli and salt, sukiyaki pork (chicken and seafood) (dry), sukiyaki (soup), and avocado smoothie, other kind of drinks and so on. For the desserts, we serve famous and delicious Thai desserts. In addition, we offer seasonal and occasional promotion, special group meeting and trip, beer promotion for happy hours, etc.

Could you please tell us how you nurture the staffs to be able to work professionally?

We provide various training programs like departmental training, language training, customer service training, general management training, and fire alarm training. Currently, we are planning for two main course. The first one English, and the second one is hospitality. As we are running a hotel and a restaurant, it is a service business. We have a lot of foreigners, and the staff should be able to speak and understand English at least basically. And they should have a service-mind. So, these are the main things we are going organize for them.

Actually, we also host the Swiss  contact Joint Training which mainly focus on hospitality field. The students who are trained by the Swiss contact Joint Training received the authorized certificates from Switzerland. The Swiss contact mainly focuses on supporting three departments including front office, food and beverages, and housekeeping. The training program duration is about 1.5 months. Last year, the Swiss contact Joint Training trained 5 persons for each department, totaling 15 persons.

Moreover, Assessment Centre of National Skills Standard Authority for Skills Development for Myanmar Workforce (Hotel Room Attendent) also helps us in training our staff. For the experienced levels like managers, we provide training course. The trained managers also give suitable on-job training course. The trained managers also give suitable on-job trainings to the entry-level staffs based on their working experiences and background knowledge.

Marketing strategy and the future plans for Holly Hotel?

For the marketing strategy, we are targeting more corporate business because our hotel position itself is also a business budget hotel. At the same time, we also have a leisure, a group tour from Thailand.

We are planning to upgrade Holly Hotel to be four and five stars Hotel, and a chain hotel.
